Reruns Ruling TRP Charts: Why innovate?

Main Themes:
Content innovators are spending oodles of money, working around the clock dishing out new content. This despite, viewers have recently been tuning into free to air (FTA) channels airing zero- cost programming re-runs and sending them to No 1 on the charts, courtesy the weightage given to FreeDish in the viewership monitoring by BARC in rural areas. Additionally, long running shows are continuing to rack up the TVTs even as new ones are being axed quickly.

In such a scenario what is the road ahead for creators? Should there be a collaborative effort to bring the rural and urban closer to each other, or it’s a myth that's never going to turn true? Should broadcasters continue to create new content or stick to the tried and tested?

Abhimanyu Singh, CEO, Contiloe

Redefining Prime Time

Main Themes:
In a VOD universe, does it make sense to have appointment viewing? Can we work on redefining what we think viewers want and at what time? Hindi GEC fiction has moved to the weekend.   Can we also think out of the box on what constitutes prime time? Is 3 pm actually different from 8 pm? Can there be original shows running throughout the day? Or do we need to stick to the current construct.

Panelists:
Anita Nayar, CEO, Havas Media Group, India and South Asia
Mukesh Sharma, Addl. Director General, Doordarshan
Raj Nayak, CEO, Colors-Viacom18
Sameer Nair, CEO, Balaji Telefilms

Is Reality TV Dying?

Non-fiction reality TV entails a major chunk of Indian TV programming. But it costs a lot to produce and audience interest seems to be waning. No non-fiction entity managed to create the desirable impact last year. So is reality TV dying a slow death? What is the road ahead?

To top it all, Indian creators have failed to come up with indigenous concepts having potential to travel the world. So acquisition is the only option left? Does the space lack variety?  The need of the hour is deep introspection.

English Vinglish: What's Beyond Hindi GECs?

Though Hindi sagas on GECs still rule the roost in terms of market share, one cannot ignore the emergence and rising importance of English shows and channels recently.  Hitherto, most of these English channels for a major part had an FPC of acquired international TV shows. But recently a few dainty steps have been taken with shows such as The Stage. Will more English channels follow and create local content?  Can all make moolah in the process?

Panelists:
Ajay Nair, Director, Only Much Louder (OML) Entertainment Private Limited
Anita Kaul Basu, Co-founder & Director, Big Synergy
